Prof. Horsley has over 30 years of exposure to managing elite sportsmen and women, and for the last 20 years specialised in optimisation and rehabilitation of the upper limb. His PhD was concerned with objectifying modifiable factors which contribute to shoulder injuries in professional rugby, and he has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters dealing with management of shoulder injury. For the last 5 years he has increased his work within professional football, regularly being consulted by professional clubs on management of upper limb issues with their players.

Dr Ian Horsley

Hon Prof. Ian Horsley PHD, MSC, MCSP, MMACP, CSCS

  

Ian is a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with over 30 years of experience; 25 years of which he has been working with elite athletes.

He developed and interest in the shoulder whilst working for the Rugby Football Union, where he was a physiotherapist working with England Students, England 7’s, England ‘A’ and  supporting the Elite Development Squad  in England’s World Cup Winning year. Along side this, Ian has worked in club rugby with Wakefield RUFC, Rotherham Titans RUFC, Doncaster Knights, RUFC, and Leeds Carnegie RUFC. He was also Head of Science and Medicine for Toronto Wolfpack ; the world’s first transatlantic sports team (Rugby League).

Ian completed his PhD on the rugby shoulder in 2013, and has published over 30 peer reviewed papers related to the shoulder (add images of titles form pubmed) and contributed chapters to several text books (book cover images). He is still research active and is an associate lecturer at the University of Salford, where he teaches on postgraduate graduate programmes, and regularly delivers modules to the University of Birmingham on assessment and management of the shoulder.

Ian was a consultant physiotherapist for The Football Association, where he began to develop a pathway for screening, preparation and management of the goalkeeper’s shoulder, and has developed resources for goalkeepers which can be seen on www.goalieshoulder.co.uk. Following on from this, Ian frequently is engaged by professional football clubs to assist with diagnosis and management of upper limb injuries in outfield players ,a s well as goalkeepers.

Alongside his role as Clinical Director of Back In Action Rehabilitation, Ian is one of the Athlete Health Lead Physiotherapists at the UK Sports Institute, where he leads on management of the upper limb within elite sport.
